I can accept payments up to $300,000! (This is a terrible Value Proposition)

I watch marketing done wrong all day long. It really is hard to do right!
I also just got a marketing email from Quickbooks. Letting me know I can accept payments up to $300,000. That seems like a really big deal, so I’d better launch a new marketing campaign.
I just got notified by Quickbooks that I can accept payments up to $300,000!
Can you imagine if I redid my website and put that at the top HERO spot. This is the main reason you should hire me. Here is my strongest selling point. Here is my Value Prop: You can pay me $300,000 at once!
It’s not hard to see that would be a stupid value proposition to my customers. If I led with that as a reason why you should hire me, you’d probably keep on scrolling. I kind of hope you keep on scrolling.
But that’s what I see most businesses doing. Instead of answering a question or addressing the problem that customers have, businesses present themselves about how awesome they think they are. It shows up in a lot of ways.
- Serving our customers since 1985
- Awarded “Best Hamster Pedicurist” for the 3rd year in a row!
- Trusted
That’s my favorite. “Trusted” Are you a bank? A rental car company? A floor waxer?
Trusted
You’d better be trusted. That’s like the lowest requirement for running a business. It’s up there with, I don’t know…breathing.
Lead with the problem your customers have. Only lead with how big a payment they can make if you’re a payment gateway.
Otherwise, listen to your sales team. Listen to recordings of customer service calls. At one job I had, for the first month I worked there, I sat in the customer service call center and listened to the customer service reps talk on the phone. I was the one-person marketing department, and I was spending 20% of my work week sitting in customer service.
Listening.
When you find the problem your customers have, and you know that you are solving it, lead with that.
Then tell them further down the page that they can pay you $300,000 at a time.
I’ve done all the marketing things for years
