What Working with Ordinary Marketing Looks Like

What does it look like to hire me as a marketing consultant? If you’re a Marketing Director and the whole marketing department is you, or if you’re a small business owner with no time to do the marketing, this is where I fit in.

When you sign up to work with me, you are getting the full knowledge of my 30 years of experience:

  • Web Design
  • StoryBrand Marketing
  • Copyhackers Conversion Copywriting
  • Social media marketing
  • SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
  • Web Hosting
  • IT Support
  • Five Dysfunctions of a Team seminars
  • Biblical Counseling and Pastoral Care

Now seriously, you’re not thinking of hiring me for all of that, are you? But that’s the experience that I bring — all at once — to your business as your marketing consultant. (I added those em dashes myself, because I was an English Major and I know how they work.)

The First Week

When I get started, I will need access to your marketing stack. That means we’ll be looking at your Google Analytics, Google Search Console, WordPress logins, (Or Wix or Squarespace), Mailchimp, or whatever other tools you’ve been using to do your marketing. If I’m going to be taking things over and migrating your website to my hosting, I will need your GoDaddy or other domain registrar info too. With as many of these as possible, you’ll set me up as a user. Don’t send me passwords to your account. You’ll keep your own login and then add me as a user. That keeps it secure and in your hands.

The other thing we’ll establish is who am I working WITH and who am I working FOR. If you are a small business owner, we’ll establish a schedule to stay in touch. If you have a marketing director, I’ll side by side with them to get the work done and give regular reports of our progress.

Communication/Project Management Tools

Some folks like to work with email and we just go back and forth via email. That tends to get lost if you are also managing invoices, billing, taxes, busted heaters, and everything else via email. I like to sequester my marketing clients into something like Trello or Asana so that all of our marketing communications are in one place.

This also benefits you as a client because when you need something, you aren’t competing in my inbox with all of the eleventy thousand emails I’m getting. You come in as an alert on my Trello dashboard. You get my attention faster. Not in my inbox while I’m in line at Aldi.

How the Marketing Sausage is Made

I like to make sure you are always in control of your data. We’ll setup a shared Google Drive folder or a Microsoft OneDrive folder where we can share logos, pictures for your website, Excel spreadsheets of reports, and all of the raw materials I reference if I’m doing an SEO audit for your site. We can meet weekly on Google Meet or in person and discuss progress and stay on track with our goals. I sometimes answer questions or lay out your next steps with a Loom video that you can watch and re-watch as you get comfortable with your new website.

I take regular backups of the work as it goes, and if we are migrating your old site, I’ll try to keep an archived copy of that. Then once your new site goes live, or the SEO Audit changes are put into effect, I’ll check up on how it’s going. I like to do a 30 day, 90 day, 6 month review of the performance of your site after it goes live.

If we’re doing an SEO audit, I might do a little look over of the performance of your site and check in with you every 90 days, to see how you’re doing with your goals.

Serving You As We Market Your Business

You may have noticed how much I move between “Your goals” and “Our goals” in this description. The thing is, while you may “want a new website,” the ultimate goal is to get more leads. You want to market your business. I too, want to market my business, and the best way for me to do that is to make you successful. I make your goals my goals, and as I learn more about your business, I’ll be honest with you if you need to do marketing beyond the boundaries of my digital marketing services. If we need to talk car wraps, billboards, yard signs, or trade shows, bring it on.

This is Ordinary Marketing

This is how it all goes when we do it right. If hiccups come, we deal with it and move on. At this point, an email newsletter, social media presence, website, and clear marketing message are table stakes. Those are the Ordinary Marketing baseline. If you want to be competitive in the market, you need to show up on those channels.

Those customers aren’t going to take you seriously without the basics.
